Strategic Research Project (2022-2028)
Personalized and data-driven specialty care
Health service research based on patient data in routine practice
Researching how to use patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) to tailor services to specific health needs is central to realizing aims of an active patient role and personalized care.
The strategic research project is an expansion of the Norse Feedback (NF) research portfolio that Helse Førde has invested in within mental health care.
The basic aim of NF is to advance clinically feasible knowledge by: a) collecting personalized self-reported data (PROMs) from patients prior to consultations; b) automatically analyze the self-report data based on best evidence; and c) feed analyzed data back to providers to guide treatment decisions in collaboration with patients. The three premises in concert constitute data-driven clinical feedback, which is key to person-centered treatment across medical contexts.
Main objective
The project will research into three specific PROM contexts; post-operative pain trajectories, ostomy adjustment care, and mental health.
The main objective is to advance scientific knowledge about clinical interpretation, implementation and stakeholder utility of PROMS used for feedback and process monitoring across medical contexts.

Work-packages and part objectives
WORK-PACKAGE 1 – POSTOPERATIVE PAIN TREATMENT
- Establish feasibility and utility of post-surgical pain PROM monitoring and alarms
- Generalize and disseminate methods for feasibilty studies transferable across contexts
WORK-PACKAGE 2 – OSTOMY CARE
- Document improvements in clinical encounters in ostomy care based on PROM feedback
- Make available a clinical feedback system for ostomy care (OAS) for Norwegian ostomy outpatient clinics
WORK-PACKAGE 3 – HEALTH ECONOMIC EVALUATION
- Develop a valid index to translate condition specific patient data into generic quality of life (QoL) in ordinary mental health setting
- Generalizing methodology to generate index from mental health to other specific contexts
Another important aim is to ensure inclusive implementation and service user participation throughout project.
An available elective educational clinical master’s module on data-driven practice will also be developed as part of the project.

Organization and collaboration
The project is organized in collaboration between Helse Førde Hospital Trust and Faculty of Health and Social sciences, Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (HVL).
A network av regional, national and international active researchers is actively involved in the project, and all hospitals trusts in Helse Vest are involved in various parts of the implementation.
The project members is organized in three groups; PhD-candidates, expert group and service user involvement group. In addition, a scientific reference group will monitor and give advice troughout the project period.
